Building a Successful Relationship with Your Recruiter

Understanding the Keys to a Strong Recruiter Partnership

Originally featured in our LinkedIn newsletter, this blog offers a deep dive into building a valuable partnership with a professional recruiter. Want more insights like this? Subscribe to our updates on LinkedIn at Blackmere Candidate Connection.

In this final part of our guide for candidates working with recruiters, we’ll share valuable tips on how to build a strong, long-lasting partnership with your recruiter for career success.

  1. Be transparent: Communicate openly about your career goals, preferences, salary expectations, and job search timeline. Make sure that you are very clear on your 'non-negotiables' such as any specific schedules, environments (ie: remote or hybrid), or special benefits!

  2. Be proactive: Regularly update your recruiter on any changes in your employment status, skills, or availability. If it has been a bit too long and you are waiting to hear back from your recruiter, have a question, have received an offer, moved forward in a different interview process, or are headed on a vacation, send your recruiter a quick message! Remember that recruiters often have inboxes that are quite full and bringing the conversation to the top of their inbox can be helpful!

  3. Be patient: Understand that finding the right opportunity takes time, and trust that your recruiter is working in your best interest. The hiring process will often get stuck, or 'bottlenecked' at a stage that is very much out of the recruiter's control.

  4. Be appreciative: Thank your recruiter for their time and effort, and consider recommending their services to others. Oftentimes, recruiters work largely on recommendations and drawing from their network. Keeping in touch is a great networking tool!

We hope this series has given you valuable insights into working with recruiters. Remember, a successful partnership requires clear communication, realistic expectations, and mutual respect.

In our next series of the Blackmere Candidate Connection, we will walk through the job search process chronologically, providing tips for each step of the way!
